Everyone is only born once, so the arrival of a new baby is a significant time for all of those who are family members or close friends of the new mom and dad. A newborn baby has an entire lifetime to look forward to, and unlimited potential. The event of a child's birth is celebrated in many different ways, according to individual custom and tradition. Some families have their own special customs to celebrate the birth of a baby.
In the U.S., the imminent birth of a baby is frequently marked with a baby shower. This is a party during which friends and family shower the expectant mother with gifts for her and her baby. This custom dates back to early in the 20th century, and at that time the gifts were usually made by hand. These days, baby gifts can be anything from bath products and clothing to blankets and plush toys.
A baby shower isn't only about presenting gifts for the child. It's also a lot of fun for the mother-to-be and the guests. It's an opportunity for the expectant mother to discuss future plans, talk about the pregnancy and get some advice from her closest friends, which makes it a very useful experience all around.
Thinking of baby gift ideas isn't necessarily that easy. It's particularly hard if the parents don't know the baby's gender. Frequently the best choice is a gift that's good for either a boy or a girl. Blankets are always useful, and so are age appropriate plush toys. Baby dishes and bath products also make delightful gifts. Maybe you'll decide to get some baby clothes; just keep in mind that you should avoid the newborn sizes because the baby will grow quickly and might even be too large for it at birth.
As you're selecting the baby's gift, remember that it doesn't need to be something big and expensive like a crib or stroller, unless you're really close to the new mom. Don't forget that it's critical that the gift you choose is well made and safe for infants. A well chosen gift shows the new mom that you're happy for her and share her excitement. When you're expecting a baby it's wonderful to realize that those you love the most share your happiness.
